How to clean the A/C Vents at your Edwardsville, IL home
Cleaning your air conditioning vents at home is one of the best ways to ensure the health of you and your family. If you don’t know how to clean your A/C vents, we’ve created a how-to guide outlining the process in just four easy steps.
1. Before you do anything, you should turn off the power that is connected to your air conditioning and heating system. Be sure that you are not just shutting off the thermostat, but that you are shutting off the unit itself.
2. Remove the air duct covers from your walls. Now, you will need to clean the grates very well! How deeply you will need to clean the grates will depend largely on how frequently they have been cleaned and/or how well they have been maintained. Regardless, be sure to clean with a sponge or rag, soap, and some hot water. Do not leave the hot water on the grates for too long, or else the paint might begin to peel.
3. Vacuum the ducts to the best of your ability. If you just need a quick fix and your vents aren’t so dirty, you can probably vacuum through the grates. For most A/C vents, you will also need to vacuum the interior. Unfortunately, most vacuums that we typically keep in our house won’t be sufficient enough to reach the nooks and crannies required to really clean the vent. You may need to rent a special vacuum in order to get to all those hard-to-reach places!
4. Do not forget to clean the grilles in the ceiling! You may need additional items in order to reach them. You may want to use a step ladder or a broom. Remember that if you haven’t cleaned them for a long time, there will be falling dust particles. Consider wearing a mask or hat in order to protect yourself from the dust.
Keep in mind that A/C vents should be cleaned about twice a year in order to prevent the build-up of potential allergens. At Dixon Heating & Air Conditioning, we want you and your family to be safe, happy, and healthy. Please contact us for any of your air conditioning needs in Edwardsville, IL!
